IACF is delighted to welcome Young Adult (YA) fiction writer Muhammad Khan as the festival’s 2019 writer-in- residence.
Muhammad Khan is an engineer, a secondary-school maths teacher, and a YA author. He lives in South London and is studying for an MA in Creative Writing at St Mary’s. Muhammad takes his inspiration from the children he teaches, as well as his own upbringing as a British-born Pakistani. He has written two novels for Macmillan Children’s Books: I Am Thunder, which was one of the most highly anticipated YA debuts of 2018, and Kick the Moon, published in 2019.
For IACF 2019, Doorstep Arts and Beyond Face Theatre have used Muhammad’s novel I Am Thunder (And I Won’t Keep Quiet) as a starting point for their Young Writer’s Project (presented at the Palace Theatre Paignton on 14 September). The Doorstep Arts and Beyond Face artists will be exploring Muhammad’s novel that presents the story of teenager Muzna Saleem and questions how far you’ll go to stand up for what you believe, to create their own original writing and songs.
