Mystery Short Story Writing Competition

IACF is delighted to invite aspiring young writers, aged between 8 and 18 years of age, to enter a new competition to find the most promising young writer of a mystery or crime short-story resident in the county of Devon.

It’s free to enter. There are two categories 8-13 years and 14-18 years of age.

It’s easy to enter. Write a short story of no more than 1,000 words involving a mystery and submit your entry online. Find out more about how to enter and terms and conditions hereThe closing date to get your story to us is 10 August 2019.

The winner of each category will win an Apple iPad Mini™ and a chance to meet crime writer Sophie Hannah and read your winning story to an audience at the International Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay in September 2019. IACF is working in partnership with Literature Works and Libraries Unlimited to bring you the competition and to celebrate the results. Visit your local library for inspiration and support.

We are looking for originality, clever plotting, quality of writing and composition. Are you the next king or queen of crime? We want to know!

To help craft your story, please visit your local library. There will be creative writing workshops running throughout the summer across Devon to help you get started and book suggestions set to inspire you.

Judges will be looking for:
• Originality, imagination and creativity
• Quality of writing and use of language
• Characterisation
• Inventiveness of plot – in particular how clues are laid for the reader and the plot resolved
• Your ability to tell a story, capture the reader and hold their attention.
