Agatha Christie Festival Ltd welcomes draft Torquay Heritage Strategy

5 August 2020

Agatha Christie Festival Ltd has responded to the consultation by Torbay Culture and Torbay Council on a draft update of Torbay’s Heritage Strategy, first issued in 2004.

We welcome the high profile given to Torbay’s literary heritage and the position of Agatha Christie, and the commitment to work towards ensuring that people seeking “an Agatha Christie experience” are attracted to Torbay in significant numbers. To achieve this, it will be vital that Torbay’s entertainment and hospitality providers work with the organisers of the International Agatha Christie Festival and others to plan and offer a rich and varied range of Festival fringe events.

We also recommend that those responsible for implementation of the Strategy should develop a reasonable understanding of the strategic approach to the protection and exploitation of heritage assets in the whole of Devon and the wider South West, and exploit opportunities for synergies or to join up, eg in lobbying national government, joint publicity etc. Most obviously there is the opportunity presented to strengthen links with Exeter which was recognised in October 2019 as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, and we recommend that the Action Plan includes a reference to Exeter’s UNESCO City of Literature outreach, programming and marketing plans.

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Agatha Christie’s first story, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and the debut of her most famous detective Hercule Poirot.

Because of the pandemic, the International Agatha Christie Festival will not take place this year. However, an online event is planned for 15 September 2020, which marks the 130th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s birth.

The International Agatha Christie Festival will next take place between 11 and 18 September 2021. Over seven days, packed with expert speakers and other features, the Festival will celebrate Agatha Christie and her astonishingly rich and diverse legacy.

Details of the Festival and fringe events in 2021 and how to buy tickets will be published on the Festival website and announced on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – using the handle @AgathaFestival).
